Our Story... “They who dream by day are cognizant of many things which escape those who dream only by night.” - Edgar Allan Poe BerHoff Homes LLC began as a dream. Founder John Hofferber always hoped to own and run his own business. After over thirty years of project management experience for other companies, John wanted to apply his expertise to something he could call his own. He got the chance in the winter of 2001 when he decided to make a career change and start a new chapter of his life. BerHoff Homes was born. John has always been an entrepreneur. He always looks for new and better ways to do things. He has always picked jobs that cause him to be creative. He holds various patents for heating elements. He designed new steering gears for the fire truck industry. He even designed and built his own house as well as restored several sports cars. Throughout his life John has always looked for something new to challenge him. That is exactly what he found when he began setting up BerHoff Homes LLC. With the help of his son-in-law Kurt Wismer, a business and marketing teacher, they developed a comprehensive business plan. After researching the competition and what people want in a custom house, they decided to focus on building houses that fit a customer’s specific needs. They wanted to focus on quality, not necessarily quantity. They wanted to be sure every customer was getting a house that they could be happy with for the rest of their lives. BerHoff Homes’ first construction was a spec home. During the process John was excited to get his feet wet. He began looking for some of the best craftsmen. From watching the hole be dug to inspecting the finishing work, John knew this was exactly what he wanted to be doing—managing the building of dream homes. The first house turned out wonderfully and John was proud to see it sold. After building a few more homes for valued customers, John decided to build a house for the summer 2004 Valley Home Builders Parade of Homes. This was to become the new home for him and his young son Erik. He picked a location out in the country, found a fitting house plan and construction began. The house was a success and it made John proud to see his business starting to grow. John’s dream has grown into a reality. Not only does the business create dream homes, but also serves as an educational opportunity for Kurt’s students. It provides real world examples for the students of Seymour Community High School.
